According to ESPN, the Bills don't want to risk injury to Taylor, especially now that the team is out of playoff contention. If Taylor gets hurt and hasn't recovered by the NFL's scheduled March 11 physical, the Bills will owe him $30.75 million guaranteed.

Instead of risking Taylor getting hurt, interim coach Anthony Lynn has decided EJ Manuel will start in his place.
Firing Ryan coincided with the decision to bench Taylor, since Ryan wanted to play Taylor on Sunday. With Ryan gone, the Bills front office won't risk losing the guaranteed injury clause over Taylor.
