At the start of Monday's game, the Jets lost a star. By the end of it, they gained another.
"Hard Knocks" standout Xavier Gipson slipped through the cracks to earn a spot on Robert Saleh's squad before the start of the regular season. On Monday, he slipped through some more; the diminutive wideout raced past the cavalry of sapphire-clad artillerymen to find the end zone and deliver the most unlikely of results at the end of the opening week of the NFL season: a Gang Green win over AFC East standouts, the Bills.
It was a night full of surprises for the boys in emerald. On play No. 4 of the regular season, Aaron Rodgers crumbled to the ground with an apparent ankle injury. He did not return to action.

Zach Wilson took the reins of the offense. He didn't find much success, save for a couple of throws here and there. Fortunately, New York's run game, spearheaded by Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook, kept things competitive on the offensive side of the ball.
New York's defense did the same, forcing Bills star Josh Allen into a number of poor decisions. The free-wheeling hurler turned the ball over four times (three interceptions, one fumble), routinely giving a frustrated Jets' offense something to cling to.
A late Garrett Wilson touchdown, followed by a Greg Zuerlein field goal, sent the game into overtime. Gipson finished matters with a punt return for posterity, another Miracle in the Meadowlands to send New York fans home happy...for the time being. With Rodgers reportedly out for the season with a ruptured Achilles, who knows just how long that can last.

Bills vs. Jets results, highlights from Monday Night Football
(All times Eastern)
11:16 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Miracle in the Meadowlands Pt. 2! Three and out leads the Bills to boot it to return man Xavier Gipson, who proceeds to make two men miss before taking it to the house to end proceedings here at MetLife Stadium. Game. Set. Match.
Jets 22, Bills 16
11:13 p.m.: Bills win the coin flip and they will receive the ball first. The ball sails into the end zone, meaning that the first — and possibly last — possession of overtime starts at the 25-yard line.
End of regulation: Jets 16, Bills 16
11:09 p.m.: Wilson will kneel and we will get some extra football!
11:08 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Bass hits it from 50! He banks it in off the inside of the left upright. That's about as close as things can come. We're headed into overtime, it seems!
Jets 16, Bills 16
11:07 p.m.: Allen zips his throw out of bounds. Bass headed onto the field from 50 yards out.
11:04 p.m.: Diggs has come to life come the end of the game. Was initially called for an offensive pass interference on Gardner. But has come through with a handful of big chances to give Bass a chance. 10 seconds remaining in the game and the ball is on New York's 32. Looks like Buffalo is sending its offense onto the field for one last play in the hopes of finding the end zone. If not, we'll see Bass take the field in an attempt to level the score at 16.
11:01 p.m.: Diggs comes to life with a big catch in traffic to move the chains. He motivated his quarterback on the sideline, then put it into practice with a big catch during the two-minute drill.
11:00 p.m.: Allen absorbs a big hit for no real reason. Really needs to work on that at this point of his career. Gets a seven-yard gain, though, so swings and roundabouts.
10:57 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! ...and he hits! Zuerlein's third field goal hands the Jets their first lead of the day with 1:48 left.
Jets 16, Bills 13
10:55 p.m.: Wilson hands the ball off the Michael Carter out of shotgun, who races down the field before being sent to the canvas before reaching the first-down marker. Zuerlein headed onto the field for the go-ahead 30-yard field goal...
10:54 p.m.: Conservative outlook by Saleh, who opts to place the ball in Cook's gut on second down. Bills will stop the clock with a timeout. Third down incoming for the Jets.
10:52 p.m.: Wilson bursts through the middle to get the first on the QB sneak on fourth! A big show of faith by Saleh toward his third-year quarterback. That should allow New York to let the clock wind down towards that two-minute intermission.
10:50 p.m.: Cook unable to break through on third down. Decision time for Saleh. Does he go for it or kick the field goal with a little less than three minutes left.
10:46 p.m.: FUMBLE! Allen takes his eyes off the snap and lets it slip through his grasp. Recovers his play only to let go while ramming into the trenches. The ball is loose and ends up in Jets hands. What a putrid display by Allen thus far. Now, the ball is firmly in the Bills territory. Can New York steal this one?
10:41 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! What a grab by Wilson! He palms his QB's effort into his right hand before juggling it into his grasp while falling down to score a touchdown. That's why he won Offensive Rookie of the Year last season. Tied ballgame now.
Bills 13, Jets 13
10:39 p.m.: Perhaps the best play of the night for Wilson; the third-year QB fires a dot into Garrett Wilson, who makes his first meaningful contribution of the game courtesy of a 14-yard game.
10:36 p.m.: Wilson stands tall in the pocket and delivers a decent throw to Lazard while crashing to the turf. Lazard nabs the ball in open air and frolics 24 yards to get into Bills territory.
10:32 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! It's Whitehead again! He sneaks underneath Davis' route and rips Allen's throw out the sky. The Jets defense and run game are doing everything in their power to give Wilson a chance.
10:30 p.m.: Allen digs into his bag of tricks to float a feather to Damien Harris for the first. Bills just letting this clock wind down it seems. Down to about 10 minutes left in the quarter.
10:26 p.m.: Wilson eats a big hit as he attempts to evade pressure. In Wilson's defense, the Buffalo's pressure has certainly made it difficult for him. Nonetheless, the ball is headed back in the Bills direction.
10:23 p.m.: Hall has proved a workhorse thus far. Left, right or through the tackles, he continues to find the holes and gash through Buffalo's formidable rearguard. Another solid carry gives New York some optimism as the third quarter comes to an end.
10:22 p.m.: Another baffling throw by Wilson, who opts to send the ball into coverage rather than laying it out of bounds on a broken play. Not giving much for his offense to work with at the moment.
10:18 p.m.: Phenomenal form tackling by Quincy Williams, who has been nothing short of remarkable today. Sends James Cook back to sender in the flat, denying the Bills running back a first down on third and short. This New York defense has come to play. And it's still giving Wilson and Co. a chance, however slim it may seem.
10:14 p.m.: Another Wilson pass falls short of the first down marker. He just can't spark this New York offense into life. The run game has been there all day. But the air attack has just not been good enough. Another Jets punt on the horizon.
10:11 p.m.: Wilson opens the drive with a toss to Cook, who carves through the pasture to grab the first down.
10:06 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Whitehead nets his second pick of the day, getting his paws on another Allen balloon. Really strange performance by the Bills star, who has done a little bit of everything — both good and bad — today. Jets defense keeping them in this.
9:59 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Zuerlein hits from distance to bring the game within seven.
9:57 p.m.: Bills send the cavalry on third down as Wilson is forced to launch it out of bounds. The BYU product did well to get the ball out of his hands, but it strayed toward the sidelines. That should give Zuerlein a chance to cut into Buffalo's edge.
9:51 p.m.: For all the obstacles that have befallen the Jets thus far, you have to say one thing: this run game has been extremely efficient. Hall and Dalvin Cook got Gang Green pushing their way through the pile with relative ease. Cook just notched another first down to keep the drive going and bring the Jets on the cusp of the red zone. This has to be the way forward if you're Robert Saleh, you'd have to imagine.

End of first half: Bills 13, Jets 3
9:31 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Bass hits field goal No. 2 to extend Buffalo's lead to 10.
Bills 13, Jets 3
9:29 p.m.: Allen is unable to scramble forward on third down again. Does one of those John Elway-patented helicopter spins in the middle of the air. Really not what you want to see as a Bills fan. Allen could do with perfecting a slide method.
9:25 p.m.: Allen moves the chains with a trudge through the trenches on third down.
9:17 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Wilson's effort falls right into Matt Milano's lap. Flips the field in the blink of an eye. Allen and the Bills have some great field position to work with.
9:09 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Allen curls out to the right to extend the play before finding his favorite target, Diggs, for Buffalo's first touchdown of the year. It was a close call initially, with Allen appearing to have potentially crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball. But the referees ruled otherwise. Impressive ad-libbing by the Bills star QB.
Bills 10, Jets 3
9:07 p.m.: Allen hits Gabe Davis on a slant route with a laser of a throw. 26 yards on a rope. The duality of man right there as Allen whips one into Davis' breadbasket but also tosses a wet noodle to Moseley.
9:04 p.m.: Allen tosses another errant throw, this one right into C.J. Moseley. Fortunately for the Bills, it falls harmlessly to the ground. Interesting start for the hurler.
9:03 p.m.: Diggs on the curl route! Goes one-on-one with Gardner and wins easily! Grabs the first down with relative.
8:59 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! New York's offense sputters as it nears the promised land. Greg Zuerlein called into action as he hits a chip shot from short distance.
8:57 p.m.: Hall finds a gaping hole on the first play of the drive and scurries some 83 yards to get the ball firmly into the red zone. The second-year tailback already is over 100 yards for the day. And he's only just getting started.
8:53 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Bizarre throw by Allen, who overcooks his effort to Deonte Harty. He finds the waiting hands of Jordan Whitehead instead. As good as an arm punt, I suppose.
8:46 p.m.: Bills defense firms up as Wilson unable to escape Jordan Phillips' grasp. Gang Green will send the ball back to Buffalo via punt. Wilson showed some good moments during his first full drive, finding Allen Lazard with a 22-yard dart. But things dried up as the ball went down the field.
8:41 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Tyler Bass sinks his field goal attempt as Buffalo opens the scoring today. Rodgers, meanwhile, left the cart and walked into the locker room on his own volition.
Bills 3, Jets 0
8:33 p.m.: As the ball heads back to Allen and the Bills, the cart is coming out for Rodgers. Allen and the Bills are moving down the field with brutal efficiency.
8:27 p.m.: The Jets drive ends without a whimper. However, all eyes will be pointed toward the blue injury tent where Rodgers lies.
8:25 p.m.: Rodgers goes down and he's wincing in pain. Zach Wilson going onto the field now! What a disappointment for Jets fans.
8:23 p.m.: Breece Hall finds a hole down the left and struts down the sideline for 26 yards! Huge play to start the season for Gang Green!
8:22 p.m.: Allen's throw to Diggs strays wide on third down. Ball headed to Rodgers and Co.
8:20 p.m.: Josh Allen's first pass of the season: right into the arms of Stefon Diggs for a seven-yard gain. Little surprise there.
8:18 p.m.: New York boots the ball into the end zone! Football is back in the Big Apple!
8:14 p.m.: The Rodgers-Garrett Wilson connection will be one to watch tonight. Kick off is on the horizon.
8:00 p.m.: Jake Paul and Aaron Rodgers: the duo we didn't ask for at all!
7:25 p.m.: And here are the cadre of inactive souls on the Bills side, spotlighted by Damar Hamlin. H/t to ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg for the report.
7:10 p.m.: Here are the Jets inactives from the day, courtesy of The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt. Not too many big names, although Carl Lawson did play a pivotal role in that Green Rush front seven last year.
6:46 p.m.: Look, mom! It's a double rainbow!
6:20 p.m.: More warnings coming out of the Big Apple, per Schefty. Although the game doesn't look under threat, tailgates galore have likely been washed away due to the inclement weather. An unfortunate situation for those who turned out en masse to MetLife Stadium.
6:00 p.m.: Most forecasts have the weather settling down way before tonight's game. Could be some slick conditions to start. But by in large, should be a fairly dry affair.
5:50 p.m.: Lots of eyes on Bills and Jets, and rightfully so. However, there could a spanner in the works if today's broadcast is to be believed. Looks like a serious chance for heavy rain at MetLife Stadium. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, who is currently on the scene, stadium officials have formally called for a shelter-in-place decree. No players or team personnel will be allowed to traverse onto the field unless the order is lifted.
