Bill Belichick has never been a man of many words.

He continued that trend when addressing the abrupt departure of defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.

"We’re not talking about an unprecedented event here," Belichick said.

When asked a followup question about possible replacements, Belichick responded, "Let’s stick with the draft."

Schiano announced he was stepping down from his position at the end of March, explaining his decision was based on his life away from the field.

"This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family," he said in a statement. "I don't want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities."

Schiano joined New England in February after spending the past three years as defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

The Patriots were 21st in total defense last season, giving up an average of 359.1 yards per game.
