“There are very few players in there with Lawrence Taylor. I would put J.J. in there,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick told Houston media members Wednesday.
Belichick will see Watt close up on Sunday night when New England travels to Houston.
Taylor flourished under Belichick, who the Giants’ linebackers coach from 1980-84. Belichick later become their defensive coordinator until 1990.
Taylor finished his career with 132 1/2 sacks. Bruce Smith is the all-time sacks leader with 200. Watt, in his fifth season, already has 70 1/2, including a league-best 13 1/2 this season. One area where Watt will have the hardest time catching up to Taylor is in Super Bowl titles. Taylor has two; Watt hasn't come close with the struggling Texans.
