Alex Smith was back on the practice field Tuesday, 11 months after his gruesome leg injury.
The Athletic reported the Redskins quarterback was spotted throwing passes in the first football-related activity he's been seen doing since getting hurt last November. He later walked through the locker room with a compression sleeve on his surgically repaired right leg.
It's a miraculous step considering Smith went under the knife more than a dozen times over the last year.
According to the Washington Times, Smith told a group of medical professionals at an event in Virginia earlier this month that he underwent 17 surgeries to repair the damage.
Smith suffered a compound fracture in his leg during the team's loss to the Texans in Week 11 last season and underwent surgery Nov. 19. He initially was expected to need six to eight months to recover, but he ended up needing to have more surgeries because of an infection. ESPN reported amputation even became an option at one point.
He led Washington to a 6-3 record in 2018, completing 205 of 308 passes for 2,180 yards, 10 touchdown and five interceptions before being sidelined.
The Redskins have struggled to find consistency under center between Case Keenum, Colt McCoy and Dwayne Haskins in Smith's absence, and the team fired coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start, though the team snapped that skid with a victory over the winless Dolphins in Week 6.
Washington will next host the 49ers (5-0) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
