The Bears organization received a shock on Wednesday when second-year defensive coordinator Alan Williams announced his resignation from his position effective immediately.
Williams, 53, didn't appear on the sidelines during Chicago's Week 2 matchup, staying away from the team for what the organization called a personal matter. He sees his tenure come to a close a little over 18 months after he started; Williams was first hired by Chicago in Feb. 2022, joining Matt Eberflus' budding staff.
The Bears have continued to struggle under Williams' helm, giving up 65 points in their opening two games. Last season, they gave up the most rushing touchdowns in the league (31).

With Williams out the door, expect Eberflus to take the reins of Chicago's defense. He did as much last weekend, overseeing the Bears' 27-17 defeat to the Buccaneers.
Why Alan Williams resigned as defensive coordinator
Williams declined to get into specifics regarding what led to his resignation as the defensive coordinator, saying in a statement only that it was a personal decision.
"I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family," Williams said in a statement released to reporters on Wednesday. "I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history."
According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Williams does plan to return to coaching.
A Bears spokesperson denied a report on social media earlier in the day that police had raided the team's Halas Hall headquarters in connection with Williams. Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the matter was handled internally by the Bears and the NFL was not involved in the situation.
