The Detroit Lions didn't get the result they wanted in the Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a 20-16 loss, but that doesn't erase the incredible performance of star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson.
Hutchinson notched a total of 4.5 sacks in the game, three of which came in the first quarter of the contest. With those three sacks in the first quarter, Hutchinson became the fourth player since 1994 to accomplish that feat, joining Chandler Jones, Chris Clemons and Simeon Rice.
When it comes to franchise history, Hutchinson's sack total is the second-most in a game by a Lions player, trailing only William Gay, who recorded 5.5 sacks in a contest in the 1983 campaign.
When it comes to NFL history, Hutchison fell 2.5 sacks short of the single-game record, which is held by Kansas City Chiefs great Derrick Thomas, who had seven during a contest in 1990.
Hutchinson's 4.5 sacks in a single game are tied for 20th all time. Had he notched a half of a sack more, he would have been tied for ninth all time.
Hutchinson has now recorded three three-sack performances during his career, with one in each season. He is just the fourth player since 1982 to record a three-sack game in each of his first three seasons in the NFL.
The other three are Justin Houston, Jevon Kearse and Reggie White — pretty good company.
Hutchinson now has 5.5 sacks through two games and is very much on his way to smashing his own personal best mark for a season, which is 11.5.
