The Giants rounded out the top 10 on Thursday's first round of the NFL Draft by selecting Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple.

At 6-1, 200 pounds, Apple is known for his good length, foot quickness and ball skills. His size allows him to play physical, and his instincts led to 22 pass breakups and four interceptions during his two seasons as a starter.

Apple was instrumental in helping Ohio State win the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship, and was key in the Buckeyes' 12-1 season a year later.

The Giants have missed the last four playoff seasons and hope that adding Apple to the roster will bolster a porous defense on the back end.

While there is no immediate pressure to start Apple early — since he will have the guidance of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and free-agent acquisition Janoris Jenkins — he will still need to contribute early if he wants to become a permanent figure with the Giants.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese said Apple was "the highest rated player on the board without issues."
