While the media attention is sure to focus on the Haason Reddick holdout situation, there are other important transpirings worth tracking as New York Jets' training camp unfolds in Florham Park.
For one, the pecking order in the receivers' room is to be determined from now until the completion of the NFL Preseason.
After WR1 Garrett Wilson, nothing seems certain and a key unknown variable in the equation is none other than third-round rookie Malachi Corley. Over the coming weeks, the No. 65 overall selection will undergo a test to show how much the Jets can count on the hard-running rookie to contribute in a significant role, likely as the primary slot receiver.
Examining players "from rookies who could earn playing time to veterans seeking to get healthy in 2024," Pro Football Focus identified "one player to watch" in every NFL's training camp. In an attempt to "determine the unsung players who will find a way to turn heads," PFF writer Bradley Locker selected Corley from the Jets' roster.
"... But with veteran addition Mike Williams still recovering from his Week 3 ACL tear in 2023, Corley should be able to get a bona-fide shot to prove his worth during training camp. The third-round pick made a name for himself at Western Kentucky, posting PFF overall grades of 82.6 or better in both 2022 and 2023. He excelled after the catch and brings alignment versatility on every play. Quite frankly, the Jets need a lot more receiver production next to budding star Garrett Wilson. ... ." - Bradley Locker in NFL training camp 2024: One player to watch for every team.
The Jets showed a strong desire to draft Corley, trading up toward the top of Round 3 to get their guy. He earned the "YAC King" nickname for his ability to gain yards after the catch while competing for Western Kentucky.
"Run after the catch. I think we can all agree to that. It’s a special trait that he has. We have to find a way to get the ball in his hands," said Jets' offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett during OTAs.
New York tried to install Mecole Hardman as the slot receiver in 2023, but undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson eventually forced him off the roster.
Gipson profiles more as a kick returner as well as a gadget receiver and occasional slot option. The primary slot WR role is available for Corley to earn during training camp.
