The New York Jets need to find a way to get it done sooner rather than later.
Their top offseason defensive acquisition wants a pay raise and could potentially become a training camp holdout if the matter is not resolved in the near future.
After the Philadelphia Eagles traded decorated veteran Haason Reddick to New York, the 29-year-old edge rusher declined to attend voluntary Organized Team Activities and sat out mandatory June minicamp, too.
Identifying one personnel move every AFC team should make prior to training camp, Pro Football Focus suggests the Jets extend Reddick's contract beyond 2024.
From PFF's One move every AFC team should make before training camp:
"Reddick has been a consistent sack-getter over the past four years, racking up more than 50 sacks. He tallied 135 pressures in two seasons with the Eagles and earned a 75.2 PFF overall grade in 2023. ... Reddick is in the prime of his career, and letting him walk at the end of the season after giving up a third-round pick for him would be bad business." - Thomas Valentine
New York is likely counting on Reddick to start opposite defensive end Jermaine Johnson. The Jets let their 2023 sacks leader walk in free agency with pass rush specialist Bryce Huff landing with the Eagles, leaving a void for Reddick to fill.
"He's got just amazing speed and he's been, like his level of production is almost unheard of, as far as the sack production and his ability to win on the edge," said Jets' defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich at the start of OTAs Phase 3. "He'll add to another critical component to our defensive line."
Reddick has made no fewer than 11.0 sacks in any of the last four seasons. He's coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl selections for Philadelphia.
Jets' veterans are due to report to camp on July 23 in Florham Park.
