The season is still weeks away, but New York Jets' head coach Robert Saleh is already on the "hot seat."
With veteran players set to report to training camp in Florham Park next week, BetOnline unveiled wagering odds for the "first head coach fired in 2024-25" and the results tabbed Saleh as the most-likely bench boss to be canned before any others.
Saleh, who enters his fourth season at the helm, carries 5-to-1 odds amongst candidates for the league's first firing. Dallas Cowboys' often-criticized head coach Mike McCarthy is the second-most likely to be the next to lose his job at 6:1. NFC head coaches Dennis Allen (Saints) and Matt Eberflus (Bears) are tied for third in the odds board at 7:1. Philadelphia Eagles' overly-boisterous leader Nick Sirianni rounds out the Top 5.
With the bright lights of the Big Apple enough to cook even the greatest of coaches at times, it's no surprise that New York Giants' third-year head coach Brian Daboll is also high on the list with 9:1 odds. It's impossible to not notice that three of the four NFC East head coaches are amongst those perceived to be on thin ice.
Coming off back-to-back 7-10 seasons, the pressure is on Saleh and the Jets to end a 13-year postseason drought.
"There's always that pressure," said Saleh during June minicamp. "I've said it before, it doesn't matter if you're an expansion team, or a team that's expected to win a Super Bowl in this market. You're expected to win regardless. It's our lives, it's what we get paid to do. Pressure is what makes it fun."
With a healthy Aaron Rodgers and a remade offensive line, New York is expected to dramatically improve its output on offense. Saleh, who is known as a defensive mind, has made himself more involved coaching on the other side of the ball this offseason.
"Just trying to provide some insight from a defensive perspective. Just understand what they're trying to accomplish and just trying to provide some insights," said Saleh.
