The offseason additions could potentially turn a costly weakness into a strength for the New York Jets this season.
Not only did the Jets lose their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback in Week 1 last year, they were forced to muddle through the season with a patchwork offensive line. New York, which used 12 different starting offensive line combinations in 2023, replaced the starters at three positions this past spring, and head coach Robert Saleh suggested the changes have solidified a crucial element of the offense.
"Upfront, for sure. Our O-line is a lot more stable. I'm really excited about that group, it's a good group," said Saleh last week after roster cutdowns.
The Jets brought two proven 33-year-old bookends into the fold. Tyron Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection for the Dallas Cowboys, will man the left tackle spot while former Gang Green starter Morgan Moses returns as the starting right tackle after being traded by the Baltimore Ravens. New York will plug free agent signee John Simpson into the starting left guard role.
"The additions we've brought in are such spectacular human beings, and leaders, and just great people, they work so hard, and you can see the group coming together, and so I'm excited to see the O-line out there," said general manager Joe Douglas
The Jets also added first-round offensive tackle Olu Fashanu to the mix as the rookie will join Gang Green's battle-tested group of reserves.
"I feel like this team, probably another silver lining for a tough year was that we had so many offensive linemen that had to play that really, pretty much, our entire depth outside of Olu, started games for us," said Douglas.
Guard, and emergency center, Xavier Newman along with right tackle Carter Warren were baptized by fire in 2023. That game experience will likely prove valuable should the Jets need to call on them again.
After enduring last year's chaos, New York apparently feels really good about its big boys up front. They will officially be put to the test on September 9 against the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers and their vaunted defensive line.
