It's the New York Jets' great debate for the final week of the NFL Preseason.
Will Aaron Rodgers play against the New York Giants, or won't he? Is there any benefit gained by trotting out the 40-year-old quarterback for the preseason finale? Is one quarter of live game reps going to better prepare the team to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1?
Rodgers has said he is willing to do what the coaching staff asks of him and head coach Robert Saleh has seemingly kept open the possibility for the four-time NFL MVP to see some snaps against the Giants in Preseason Game No. 3.
After Monday's practice, Saleh was still non-committal in terms of a plan for the August 24 exhibition.
"We haven't talked about it yet. We'll reevaluate everything after the practice on Wednesday and come up with a decision," said Saleh.
There was likely a reason why Rodgers did not take a preseason game snap in any of his final four years with the Green Bay Packers, and one would think that reason, whatever it may be, would carry over to his time in New York. While not dressed for the game, the decorated field general appeared on the WCBS local broadcast as the Jets were battling the Carolina Panthers on August 17 and offered a quick comment on the situation.
"You never know. I'm not sure. I mean, I feel like Saleh already ruled me out a few weeks ago. I might beg him and maybe I'll get to be out there," said Rodgers during a live game interview from the sideline.
Last summer, Rodgers was inactive for the Jets' first three preseason outings, which started with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. He finally suited up for the annual end-of-the-summer exhibition against Big Blue and proceeded to play two offensive series.
