The New York Jets' receiving corps features WR1 Garrett Wilson followed by multiple unknown commodities, and some are suggesting the team needs to add a former Pro Bowl selection to the mix.
With WR2 Mike Williams coming off an ACL tear and rookie Malachi Corley making a significant jump up from Western Kentucky, the Jets may have a spot for a proven performer. Although the free-agent options have dwindled, there are still a handful of accomplished veterans available.
Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox named three free agents that the Jets "must consider before training camp" and former Las Vegas Raiders' fifth-round receiver Hunter Renfrow topped the list. The author projected a modest one-year, $1.2 million contract for Renfrow wherever he signs.
" ... Renfrow could be a strong option in the slot who could spell Corley and provide a dependable third-down target. Given his recent lack of production—he had only 25 catches in 2023—Renfrow could also be open to signing a team-friendly contract," said Knox.
The 28-year-old Renfrow's production has slipped significantly over the past two seasons. Over his last 27 games, Renfrow has totaled 61 receptions for 585 yards.
After opening his career by posting two consecutive 600+ yard receiving campaign, Renfrow erupted in 2021. The former Clemson star secured 103 of 128 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. He earned a Pro Bowl nod for his efforts.
Even with the Jets facing questions amongst their receiving corps, and Renfrow's potential to rediscover his old form, signing the free agent may not be the organization's best use of resources. Renfrow is far from a guarantee and New York already has multiple slot receiver options. In fact, Corley and second-year pro Xavier Gipson are all but limited to the slot position.
