When it comes to the young star NFL pass-catchers, New York Jets' WR1 Garrett Wilson is among the best after only two years as a pro.
The 2022 first-round draft pick out of Ohio State has been a revelation since the Jets drafted him 10th overall. He's solidified himself as the team's true No. 1 WR over back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is one of the main focal points of the offense heading into 2024.
Wilson's been great and looks to take his game to a whole new level with QB Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. The Sporting News writer Vinnie Iyer ranked the top 30 WRs in the NFL heading into Week 1 and put Wilson in the middle at No. 15.
"Wilson will try to get big-time QB help from Aaron Rodgers after still producing well last year with lesser play at the position. He can have a huge breakout with his combination of natural big-play flair and savvy route-running," said Iyer.
This is a fair assessment for Wilson, who has produced despite a shaky quarterback situation.
There, however, is a major head-scratcher in terms of a player that's ahead of Wilson. Rookie WR Marvin Harrison was ranked as the sixth best WR by Iyer. A fellow Buckeye hasn't played a single down for the Arizona Cardinals and should not be ranked ahead of Wilson, who has already achieved far more in two pro seasons.
Wilson has had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with a total of eight quarterbacks at the helm. That being said, the majority of his time in the NFL has been receiving passes from former Jets QB Zach Wilson, who was constantly under pressure and struggled mightily. Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos this offseason and now is a third-stringer in a young Broncos QB room.
Last year, Wilson ranked 4th in the NFL in targets with 163 and 13th in receptions with 95. These numbers can continue to increase and should with Rodgers at QB. Wilson has been extremely impressive throughout camp as well which should give Jets fans hope of what this Rodgers-Wilson dynamic duo could be in 2024.
Overall, the other WRs ahead of Wilson are in a solid order, and being ranked 15th is a good spot for Wilson. Jets' fans should expect Wilson to improve significantly with a Hall-of-Famer at the helm.
