The New York Jets lost the services of their starting slot cornerback early on in the Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and it's unknown how long he will be unavailable.
Michael Carter II played only one snap before exiting the eventual 23-17 setback and never returned. As it turns out, he was suffering from a hamstring injury that popped up during warmups.
"It actually happened in pregame," said head coach Robert Saleh afterwards.
New York officially ruled Carter as doubtful to return with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter. The Jets started the game with a three-linebacker formation as opposed to deploying five defensive backs.
Carter came onto the field for the Vikings' first third-down play but that was the extent of his participation for the day. When using a five defensive back look, third safety Ashtyn Davis filled the role.
"Michael's gonna get evaluated. I'll have something more for you guys on Thursday," said Saleh while addressing reporters virtually on Monday morning.
The 25-year-old Carter, a 2021 fifth-round draft pick, signed a three-year contract extension prior to the start of the regular season. He battled an ankle injury throughout training camp and was on the injury report for a couple weeks.
The Jets will have the benefit of an extra day's rest following their return from London. New York hosts the Buffalo Bills for Monday Night Football on October 14.
"For sure, it [extra day] helps a lot," said Saleh.
