The New York Giants released veteran fullback Jakob Johnson ahead of Tuesday's deadline to trim the roster to 53 players.

Even though Johnson just recently signed with the Giants on Aug. 16 before the second preseason game against the Houston Texans, this comes as a mild surprise.

Johnson's ability as a run blocker seemed to give him a strong chance at earning a roster spot in place of a fourth tight end over Lawrence Cager and Jack Stoll.

However, the Giants released the vested veteran ahead of Tuesday's deadline, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Johnson is a potential practice squad addition if he's not scooped up by another team in free agency. The Giants need as much run-blocking help as they can get, and Johnson's history with offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo.

The Giants have until 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday to trim the roster down to 53 players.
