Takeaways from Giants' unofficial depth chart for preseason Week 1 image

The New York Giants released their first unofficial depth chart Monday ahead of the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions.

Releasing the depth chart is a formality before every game. The word "unofficial" carries a lot of weight here.

Just because a player is listed at a certain spot on the depth chart doesn't mean that's their actual spot. It's typically pretty close, but teams put their depth charts together in certain ways for various reasons.

The Giants and Lions are scheduled to square off Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Here are some takeaways from the Giants' first depth chart ahead of preseason Week 1:

Takeaways

  • Rookie Malik Nabers is unsurprisingly listed as a starter. Meanwhile, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt share the other starting wide receiver spot.
  • Rookie Theo Johnson is listed as the fourth-string tight end but in a real game scenario, he's likely the second string.
  • At right tackle, Evan Neal remains on the PUP list so Jermaine Eluemunor is listed as the starter.
  • Undrafted rookie Jake Kubas is ahead of Marcus McKethan.

Takeaways

  • Second-year undrafted free agent Dyontae Johnson has gotten some first-team work during camp and is listed as the second string behind Micah McFadden.
  • As expected since Shane Bowen's comments, Dane Belton is listed as the starting safety. Rookie Tyler Nubin is just working his way back from a calf injury.
  • Meanwhile, rookie Dru Phillips is listed as the starting slot defender, which falls in line with what camp has shown thus far.
  • Defensive tackle Ryder Anderson has gotten some first-team reps, and it seems he's ahead of Jordan Phillips for that role behind Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

Takeaways

  • Gunner Olszewski is listed ahead of Isaiah McKenzie, which could be the reason he wins the battle for one of the final roster spots.
  • It would be interesting to see what Tyrone Tracy could do on returns given his elusiveness in the open field.
