The New Orleans Saints will meet with arguably the best free agent left on the open market by hosting Justin Simmons on a visit this week.
According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, that visit will occur Wednesday in Irvine, California, where the Saints are holding training camp.
Those Saints have a clear-cut need at the safety spot next to Tyrann Mathieu. Both 2023 fifth-round pick Jordan Howden and veteran Johnathan Abram have yet to claim the starting role.
Simmons, still just 30 years old, has four All-Pros to his name over the course of eight years with the Denver Broncos in which he accumulated 30 inteceptions, the most of any player in that span. Last season alone, he picked off three passes and tallied 70 tackles en route to a Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro nod.
At this stage of free agency, the link shouldn’t come as a surprise either—Simmons played for current Saints defensive coordinator Joe Woods when he entered the league in 2016. Current Saints defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson was also on staff for a few years in Denver alongside Simmons, too.
Denver cut ties with Simmons earlier this offseason to save cap space, though nearly $12 million in free cap space for the Saints says the front office has plenty of flexibility to get a deal done.
