The New England Patriots were demolished 24-3 in primetime on Thursday night by the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Throughout the contest, New England's offense continued to look outmatched on nearly every play, as starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett completed just 12 passes for 98 yards while taking five sacks, and they didn't score a single touchdown.
Late in the game, the Patriots replaced Brissett with third-overall pick Drake Maye, who completed four of his eight passes for 22 yards while taking two sacks.
After the final whistle, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked if he was considering a quarterback change, and he was non-committal one way or another.
On Friday morning, Mayo had a definitive answer for the media.
"Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he's not the quarterback," Mayo said. "I thought, last night, he showed a lot of toughness, a lot of grit. On protection breakdowns, he tried to do what we asked him to do. But, as a team, as a coaching staff, we just gotta be better."
This is the right call at this point, as the offensive line is so bad, that there's probably not much Maye will learn from being on the field at this time.
Brissett is the team's sacrificial lamb, but they owe it to him to try to fix things and make it work.
