The New England Patriots were expected to have a strong defensive front this season, but they suffered a big blow at the beginning of training camp when defensive lineman Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots.
With no timetable for his return and a sole focus on his health, the team has been quiet about Barmore's status, but head coach Jerod Mayo provided an update on Friday during his media availability.
"He's progressing," Mayo said. "He still has some checkpoints or hurdles to get over."
That small tidbit was positive, but Mayo was then asked if he feels better now about his chances of playing again this season over a few weeks ago, and that response was even better.
"I would say 'yes,'" Mayo said.
Obviously, Barmore's health is the most important factor here, and he should do whatever is best for him long-term, but if the Patriots could get him back, their front would look a lot better.
Having Barmore join second-year Keion White would keep some offensive coordinators, quarterbacks and offensive line coaches up at night.
