It's no secret that the New England Patriots need to get second-year wide receiver Demario Douglas more involved in their offense if they want to have more success.
Douglas was targeted just three times in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, catching two passes for 12 total yards, and he wasn't targeted at all in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.
After the loss, head coach Jerod Mayo spoke about giving him more opportunities.
“Yeah, we have to get him going,” Mayo said. “We have to scheme up some things for him. He’s one of our most explosive players, and that’s on us as coaches to put it together.”
While Douglas declined to speak to the media on Sunday, he did talk on Monday.
According to The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, Douglas said his lack of targets in the overtime loss was "very challenging."
He doesn't believe this issue is with his route running. He's doing what he needs to do to get the ball.
“Pull up the film, you can tell,” Douglas said. “But things happen for a reason. Whenever my time’s ready, I’m going to show them.”
Last year, Douglas was New England's best wideout, catching 49 passes for 561 yards. He had more receviing yards than any other rokie receiver during Bill Belichick's tenure.
So, it's he's understandbly upset, and even quarterback Jacoby Brissett agrees.
"It's a good thing that he's frustrated," Brissett said. "You want players that want the ball. It would be a crime if he didn't. I understood his frustration.
Something needs to be done Brissett needs to look for Douglas more, or offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt needs to make it a priority to get the wideout the ball. Either way, having a passing game that doesn't feature your best wide receivers won't help.
