On Thursday, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo announced that Jacoby Brissett will be the team's starting quarterback for the 2024 season, and Drake Maye will start the year as the backup.

Brissett and Maye did battle throughout training camp and the preseason with the rookie coming on strong in recent weeks and outplaying the veteran in their limited reps in the three games against the Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

After Mayo made the announcement, Maye spoke to a crowd of media members who surrounded him in the locker room and shared his thoughts on the decision.

“There’s two ways to look at it. Obviously, I want to play, the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and got reps with the 1s all camp," he said (via. ESPN's Mike Reiss). "I feel like I left it all out there. No regrets coming back.”

The timeline is unclear for now, but Maye will take over as the team's starting quarterback at some point, whether it's due to injury, poor play or just time. However, to start the season, Brissett will be under center for the Patriots just as he was in three games during his rookie season in 2016.
