The New England Patriots are holding their second mandatory minicamp session on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium, but one of their players is sitting on the sidelines.
Those in attendance for Monday's session saw Patriots defensive lineman Davon Godchaux stand on the sidelines during drills.
According to head coach Jerod Mayo, Godchaux is looking for a bit of a bump.
"D.G., we want him here," Mayo said before Wednesday's session. "He's one of our best players. He's working. I will say that. He's working. He's here every single day and has been here every single day. I look forward to getting him on the field in camp... I wouldn't put in those words [comparing this to Matthew Judon's situation last year]. There are guys that obviously want to redo contracts and stuff like that. And, not just D.G. There are a lot of guys who want to do those things. We're working through it. Eliot [Wolf] and his staff do a great job as far as handling that. I don't get into the player contracts. What I will say is one thing that I've learned is sometimes the value that the team has on a person is a little bit different than the value that the market has on a person."
Godchaux, 30, is currently in the last year of his deal after receiving a two-year extension in 2022.
In 2024, he has an $11.8 million cap hit, and he's set to make $7.15 million in base salary, $1 million in per-game roster bonus and $150,000 in workout bonuses.
With New England moving on from Lawrence Guy this offseason, Godchaux's role is expected to grow this year.
