The Minnesota Vikings are set to have a quarterback competition in training camp this year. That's something which we all expected, but didn't take too seriously due to how head coach Kevin O'Connell talked about Sam Darnold coming out of OTAs and minicamp.

On Monday afternoon, O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah spoke to the media and the Vikings head coach confirmed there would be a competition for the starting quarterback job.

Darnold is the presumed favorite for multiple reasons. He performed very well during the offseason program after signing a one-year, $10 million contract during the offseason after the Vikings chose to move on from Kirk Cousins. Darnold isn't the sexiest of names, but he is capable.

The question then focuses on first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. How does he fit into the equation? O'Connell said that McCarthy will also get work with the first-team and he wants a "really competitive situation" during training camp. Whenever McCarthy ends up starting will be based on hitting the benchmarks that O'Connell and the organization have set for him.

This won't be the last time we talk about the quarterback position in this medium.
