Scottie Scheffler arrest evokes memories of Vikings’ Randy Moss in 2002 image

The PGA Championship was the talk of the sports world Friday morning when the number one golfer in the world Scottie Scheffler was arrested and charged with four different crimes.

  • 2nd-degree assault of a police officer (felony)
  • 3rd-degree criminal mischief
  • Reckless driving
  • Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic

It all appears to be a misunderstanding as the police were directing traffic after a pedestrian passed away when they were hit by a bus earlier Friday morning. The story itself is developing, but it was eerily similar to one that former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss had in 2002.

Moss was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon after using his car to push a police officer in September of 2002. The ESPN story from the time described it as Moss moving the police officer with no intention to hurt them.

The 27-year-old agent stepped in front of Moss to stop him from making an illegal turn in downtown Minneapolis, and Moss used his 2002 Lexus to slowly push the officer a half-block along the street, stopping when she fell to the ground, police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington said.

Barrington said Amy Zaccardi is a city employee but not a police officer and was not seriously hurt. Witnesses called the situation "surreal'' but said it was clear Moss did not intend to hurt Zaccardi.

Scheffler allegedly ended up driving a short distance with an officer "attached" to his car with the final line of the police report being one that will live in infamy.

"Detective Gillis' uniform pants, valued at approximately $80, were damaged beyond repair."

Moss ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of careless driving and was required to complete 40 hours of community service. What will Scheffler end up pleading and being sentenced with if anything? That remains to be seen, but the cases sure are eerily similar.
