The Minnesota Vikings were relentless and aggressive in trying to get their quarterback of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft. They were successful when they selected Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy at 10th overall after a slight trade-up with the New York Jets.
One of the big questions coming out of the NFL draft was how the Vikings had the quarterback class stacked. Who was their preferred option? Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated believes the Vikings had it Maye then McCarthy.
As for how the teams had the guys ranked, the Vikings really dove in on the guys after the top two, and had Maye (for whom they offered 11, 23 and a 2025 first-rounder, with pick swaps favoring them bringing some value back), then McCarthy.
I think the beginning part of Breer's statement is important. The Vikings "really dove in on the guys after the top two" tells us that they were relatively set in stone for months and that made the process a little bit more focused with Maye, McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix.
Will McCarthy be the biggest hit of the bunch? That remains to be seen, but anything is possible when you have the best situation of the group.
