The Minnesota Vikings were in a near desperate state to go and get a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. They let Kirk Cousins leave and signed Sam Darnold in free agency but that isn't a long-term play at the position.

When the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was progressing, the quarterbacks were going fast and furious with the Vikings striking out with a trade up into the top five to go get one. Once Michael Penix Jr. went to the Atlanta Falcons at eighth overall, fans were starting to get into panic mode. They ended up trading up to 10th overall to get Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Other teams were also trying to trade up, or in the case of the Denver Broncos, spike the trade cost for the Vikings. Head coach Sean Payton said as much during his post draft press conference.

Trying to trade up, or in other words pretending, is normal posturing. You don't want your contemporaries getting a good deal and they approach these situations like an auction. Now, it's a dangerous game to play, especially since Payton is already a villain in the eyes of Vikings fans.
