Do the Minnesota Vikings have a major hole at wide receiver three going into the 2024 season? Considering how the roster is currently constructed and how head coach Kevin O'Connell likes to call the offense, it's an important spot.
The Vikings use 11 personnel frequently, as it was the base for O'Connell when he was with the Los Angeles Rams and his first two seasons as the head coach. It allows you to be more versatile and explosive in the passing game, especially if you can still run the ball.
The key to running 11 personnel is with run blocking. If your receivers excel in that area, it can be a massive benefit to you. SKOR North's Judd Zulgad referenced that when he said the Vikings should sign wide receiver Julio Jones to compete for WR3.
"All right, let's go to the geriatric bin. I'm going to go to the old folks football home. And I'm going to pick up in my van 35 year old Julio Jones, who has played 13 years. Remains on the market was a Philadelphia Eagle for a portion of last year. First of all, he is a good run blocker. This is interesting. Okay, so I think we think of him and we're like, what were the stats? But he is a willing and effective run blocker. To go back to find his but his best year it's 2015 with the Falcons. So it's a long time ago and 16 games 136 catches, 1,871 yards, eight touchdowns last year. With the eagle club and games 11 catches 74 yards, three touchdowns. The last three years he has bounced from the Titans to the Buccaneers to the Eagles and he was an in-season pickup type of guy so I don't even know if he would come to camp. Does he potentially intrigue me as a three on a very cheap contract for a year? I gotta say I think I would after doing this project. I think I would probably kick the tires on him with his game before I would on Renfrow."
Jones is a very intriguing player. It's evident that his days of dominance are behind him. However, Jones could still have a little bit left in the tank. He was used in red zone situations for the Eagles and caught three touchdowns.
Could the Vikings take a look at Jones? Sure! The question on whether or not Jones would want to go to training camp is a really good one, as some veterans would prefer to skip that grueling month.
