The Minnesota Vikings are firmly entrenched in OTAs and are progressing toward training camp at TCO Performance Center. This will be the third season under head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and it's also a turning point in the future of the organization.
To prepare for the pivotal 2024 season, we will break down each player on the 90-man roster leading up to training camp. In this series, we will look into their background, scheme fit, best and worst case scenario along with what to expect from each player. It will also help gain more insight on each player going into the year, especially with players who haven't gotten much fanfare.
Will Jeremy Flax make noise on the offensive line?
Background
Flax signed with the Kentucky Wildcats out of the JUCO ranks as a four-star recruit in the class of 2020. He redshirted his first season in 2020 and played in 11 games during his sophomore year in 2021. Over his final two season, Flax started 23 total games at right tackle. He earned Outland Trophy Player of the Week and SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his performance against Florida.
Scheme fit
With the transition to more gap-scheme running plays, Flax has the strength to move bodies on the interior but you don't want him climbing to the second level. He also is primed to kick inside due to the lack of athletic profile.
Best case scenario
Flax thrives on the interior as a guard with his size and power and overtakes his competition with his ability to move bodies. His inconsistent hands aren't an issue and he is the first offensive lineman to get elevated on gameday from the practice squad.
Worst case scenario
Flax might be powerful but his athleticism ends up crippling him in the NFL. A 5.64 40-yard dash is one of many metrics showing how limited a player he is. Flax is one of the team's first cuts and comes before final cuts.
What to expect in 2024
Flax is an intriguing player experience-wise, especially with a move inside to guard. He doesn't have a quality athletic profile in the slightest, which is his biggest hurdle to making a roster. However, if he can play well on the interior, Flax might be worth keeping on the practice squad. Ideally, Flax would slim down from 343 lbs to around 320 lbs to improve his footspeed and versatility, which would also help him make the roster.
