The Minnesota Vikings have a lot on their plate when it comes to the future of the franchise. They are in line to draft their quarterback of the future as well as sign both Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw to contract extensions.
Jordan Mailata contract extension: How it impacts Christian Darrisaw
The future extension for Darrisaw just had another extension announced that will impact those negotiations. The Philadelphia Eagles announced an extension for left tackle Jordan Mailata to a three year, $66 million contract.
This is the third left tackle extension announced in recent months that will have a major impact on the discussions with Darrisaw. The others are Laremy Tunsil, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Houston Texans back in March of 202rd`3 and Andrew Thomas who signed a five-year, $117.5 million contract extension with the New York Giants in July of 2023.
Darrisaw is getting to the point where he is becoming a great left tackle in the National Football League. He has shown to have all the tools to become a true dominant force. Last offseason, Darrisaw was compared to Trent Williams who has an average annual value of $23.01 million. The tackle market is getting more expensive.
What does the Mailata extension mean for Darrisaw? Well, it all depends on how he wants to approach it. If he wants a three-year deal, this is the likely structure as he will be able to cash in again before he turns 30. If he takes the longer-term contract, a structure and average annual value more similar to what Thomas got makes sense with the salary cap going up at a much higher rate.
When will the Vikings and Darrisaw be motivated to get this done? That will be the biggest question mark here, as the fifth year option is almost certain to be used on Darrisaw before the deadline right after the draft. He might choose to wait until the salary cap is set for the 2025 season to maximize his money.
