The Minnesota Vikings got their quarterback of the future in J.J. McCarthy and he drew a fascinating comparison from former NFL quarterback turned quarterback coach John Beck.
For context, Beck isn't just a quarterback coach like the Jordan Palmer's of the world, he's been working with McCarthy during the offseason. These kinds of coaches are invaluable to the development of players in the offseason due to NFL coaches having limited access to them.
In a piece from The Athletic's Alec Lewis, Beck compared McCarthy to another former Shanahan offense disciple: former Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
“The very same things that made Mike Shanahan like Jay Cutler and take him as a first-rounder are going to be some of the things people in this tree will see when he (McCarthy) comes out of college,” Beck said.
That's a very interesting comparison. Cutler was known for being somewhat of a gunslinger but he is an athletic quarterback that could make every throw in the book. The difference between the two quarterbacks is that McCarthy doesn't have the same arm arrogance and recklessness that Cutler has. It's an important distinction and why comps aren't always the best tool to use.
Is there lot to compare between the two? Absolutely. As long as McCarthy doesn't become the reckless type of player that Cutler was, I think Vikings fans will be happy with that outcome.
