The Miami Dolphins have been hit hard by injuries along the edge this season. Not only is veteran Bradley Chubb still on the physically unable to perform list, but rising star edge rusher Jaelan Phillips is out for the rest of the season.
Miami's issue along the edge pales in comparison to that of their quarterback situation, which is in shambles in the wake of Tua Tagovailoa's latest concussion. But that doesn't mean the team shouldn't address the problem in the event Tua returns and the Dolphins make a run.
Knowing that, Bleacher Report's Scouting Department suggests the Dolphins bring in veteran edge rusher Shaq Lawson to help out with the team's problem at edge rusher. Lawson is currently on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad but can be signed away if the Dolphins add him to the active roster.
Tua Tagoaviloa's injury isn't the only thing that has derailed the Dolphins' season. They're also dealing with a rash of injuries on the edge that includes Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb. Phillips was lost for the season to a torn ACL in Week 4 and Bradley Chubb is still on the PUP list.
The Dolphins really shouldn't be giving up draft capital to compete this season. The injuries have given them a difficult road to hoe, but signing a veteran free agent who could help them put themselves in a position to complete.
While having Lawson would give the Dolphins another option, he's far from a guarantee to move the needle.
After all, the 30-year-old hasn't played in a single game this season and only recently signed with the Panthers, so there's no telling what kind of condition he's in. Further, Lawson had just one sack in 16 games last season and hasn't tallied more than 3.5 since 2020.
Then again, adding quality pass-rushers at this point in the year is easier said than done, as teams are rarely looking to part with them, and when they do, there is always a ton of competition for their services.
The Dolphins may just have to settle for a lackluster option like Lawson to at least try and give their defense some help.
