The Miami Dolphins have suddenly found themselves in quarterback purgatory in the wake of starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s third diagnosed concussion of his professional career. Tagovailoa has been meeting with neurologists to discuss his prognosis, and there’s currently no timetable for his return to the team. Tagovailoa is on injured reserve, meaning the earliest the Dolphins can get their starter back is Week 8.
That has left the Dolphins in the unenviable position of having to turn to their backup quarterback. Unfortunately for Miami, they haven’t been as fortunate as teams like the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers. Where the Packers and Panthers got solid performances from the likes of Malik Willis and Andy Dalton, the Dolphins got a disappointing performance out of Skylar Thompson in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Thompson finished the day 13-for-19 with just 107 yards. Then things went from bad to worse for the Dolphins, as Thompson was driven from the game with a “painful rib injury” and has been listed by the team as day-to-day with a chest injury. Third-string quarterback Tim Boyle finished out the game against Seattle, and the chaos at the position began.
There’s has been all kinds of buzz surrounding the Miami Dolphins and their quarterback situation. Will the team try and entice the Panthers into trading the recently-benched Bryce Young? Could the Dolphins look towards the Pittsburgh Steelers and try to make a deal for injured starter Russell Wilson? As of right now, there’s no indication that the Dolphins are looking to make a splash at the position. So what are they going to do?
Thompson is listed as day-to-day, but it’s looking more and more unlikely that he’s going to be the starter for the Dolphins’ Monday night game against the Tennessee Titans. So who will be the starter? According to Miami Dolphins beat writer Barry Jackson, those duties may fall on the recently-acquired Tyler Huntley.
Huntley, the former Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl quarterback, was recently signed by the team off the Ravens’ practice squad. Miami wanted to give him time to practice and learn the playbook, and kept him out of the starting lineup last week. Now, in light of Thompson’s injury and poor performance, it looks like Huntley is the clubhouse leader to start. Things could change over the next three days, but it’s looking more and more likely that the Dolphins will have their third different starting quarterback in as many weeks.
