The initial reaction, at least for outsiders, was that Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua would miss a mere four games after going to injured reserve with a PCL sprain.
But Nacua’s absence could be quite a bit longer.
Rams head coach Sean McVay got the ball rolling on this idea, telling reporters that this type of injury means he could be "out longer than that, we'll see," according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer followed with a new report during an appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show” on Wednesday.
“So he’s been banged up,” Breer said. “So I think that they’re going to take their time in bringing him back. The good news for the Rams is they feel great about where they’re at at the position…I don’t think it’s any secret. Part of the deal is his playing style does put him in harm's way and he has almost like an Anquan Boldin type of playing style and I think that they want to be careful…as much as he wants to play.”
The Rams certainly have plenty to be encouraged by at the wideout position beyond Nacua if that showing against a strong Detroit Lions defense is a sign of things to come.
There, Cooper Kupp led the the Rams in receiving with 14 catches for 110 yards and a score, while Tyler Johnson caught five of his seven targets for 79 yards.
In a perfect world, the Rams wouldn’t have to miss Nacua for another four consecutive NFC games. But a Week 6 bye does seem to position things nicely for a possible Week 7 return. The Rams, clearly, feel like the wideout depth chart can carry the workload while he gets right.
