The Los Angeles Chargers had an encouraging start to their Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes threw an interception and one of their top offensive playmakers, Rashee Rice, had to leave the game with an injury. The Chargers led 10-0 and were well on their way to an upset.
Instead, they never scored another point and fell to the Chiefs, 17-10. The loss was the second in a row for the Chargers following a 2-0 start. One can certainly question how good this Chargers team really is at this point as their two wins are over the Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers while they dropped games to the Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News has that question in mind as he has dropped the Chargers down to No. 17 in his weekly power rankings. Two weeks ago, they were up to No. 6.
"The Chargers have faded since their hot start against lesser teams, but their defense will keep them in most games. They just need to find more scoring pop sooner rather than later after their Week 5 bye."
The Chargers will need to use their Week 5 bye to accomplish some things. First, they need to get key players (Justin Herbert, Joey Bosa, Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt) healthy as soon as possible. A week off will help that process.
They also need to figure out how to manufacture more offense, particularly late in games. In the last three games, the Chargers have scored a total of three points. In the losses to Pittsburgh and Kansas City, they didn't score a single point in the final frame. That isn't going to get it done, and Jim Harbaugh knows that.
Following the bye week, the Chargers head to Empower Field to face the Denver Broncos.
