The Los Angeles Chargers are looking at everything in training camp while trying to build the best 53-man roster for the upcoming season. That has included experimenting with players playing out of position.
On Friday, fans at camp saw the Chargers trying Jordan McFadden, an offensive lineman, at fullback.

While that could be an extra wrinkle that Jim Harbaugh puts in occasionally, it's interesting that the team is working on something like that early in training camp. The Chargers also signed Will Dissly this offseason, a tight end who can be terrific in the blocking game.
So how great of a shot does Ben Mason have of making this team?
Ben Mason signed with the Chargers as a free agent in April
When you look at the Chargers' roster, you see Mason listed as the only fullback so the obvious thought is, he's going to make the final roster because he has no competition. Or does he?
Mason was yet another player the team signed this offseason with ties to the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens took him in the fifth round of the 2021 draft and he has had two stints with them, while also playing for the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears.
But he has only appeared in one regular season game and the only thing he has going for him right now is the fact that he played at Michigan. Harbaugh has shown himself to be partial to players he had in college, but Mason is going to have a tough time making this team.
With the likes of McFadden already getting looks as a short-yardage/goal-line fullback and a solid blocker in Dissly, who could easily play somewhat of an H-back role, Mason could easily be left off the team and be more of a practice squad candidate.
