The Kansas City Chiefs traded to move up in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft to select wide receiver Xavier Worthy from the University of Texas. Worthy ran a 4.21 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in March. The time was the fastest ever ran by any player at the Combine, ever.
He is the NFL's equivalent to Noah Lyles
This meant veterans were on the chopping block. Enter Kadarius Toney.
Toney entered the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears in need of a good, if not great game to avoid the dreaded visit from the grim reaper on Tuesday, when all teams must cut down to their final 53-man roster.
In NFL speak, he was on the bubble.
Toney just might have secured himself a roster spot Thursday night as he caught two of the three passes thrown his way and returned a punt 16 yards to put the Chiefs in good field position. One of his receptions was a 20-yard crossing route from backup quarterback Chris Oladokun. That was the first flash of brilliance that Toney has displayed in a preseason game this summer.
In fact, it just might have saved his career in Kansas City,
The year 2023 was not especially kind to Toney as he started the season off poorly. He was inactive for the final seven games of the regular season. He was also listed as an inactive for the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.
This training camp has been far from spectacular and Toney appeared to pick up where he left off last season, in coach Andy Reid's doghouse. He had a poor preseason until Thursday night. Time will tell if the turk goes to pay him a visit on Tuesday.
