The Kansas City Chiefs have had a few new fan favorites emerge this preseason. None have been more popular, though, than running back/fullback Carson Steele.
The undrafted free agent out of UCLA had a big first exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, rushing for a touchdown and averaging over seven yards per carry. His big preseason continued and hit its peak in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears. Steele ran for 50 yards, including a 32 yard run where he ran through several would-be tacklers to get to the end zone.
With his performance this preseason, it feels like a borderline lock that Steele has earned a roster spot in some capacity. His power run style would be a tremendous compliment to Isiah Pacheco in the backfield, and he could end up being a feature name on special teams. Plus, he’s shown more in three preseason games than Clyde Edwards-Helaire has shown in the last two years with Kansas City. In that span, he has carried the ball a total of 140 times for four touchdowns, and only scored one in 2023.
These types of players and performances are what the preseason is for, and Steele has earned a spot on the 53-man roster. If he doesn’t make the Chiefs’ roster, he’ll make someone else’s.
