The Indianapolis Colts roster doesn't have many roles for undrafted free-agent rookies to grab, but there is one intriguing battle in the quarterback room.

While we know Anthony Richardson is the starter, and the Colts signed veteran Joe Flacco to a one-year deal in free agency, the competition for the No. 3 quarterback role is wide open.

The battle between third-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger and undrafted free-agent rookie Kedon Slovis is shaping up to be one to watch in training camp.

Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News agrees, listing Slovis among the undrafted players who could make an NFL roster this fall.

The Colts extended Joe Flacco's career after his supersub stint with the Browns, signing him to replace Gardner Minshew as the top backup to Anthony Richardson. But No. 3 Sam Ehlinger is a holdover pre-Shane Steichen's offense. Slovis (6-2, 223 pounds) did have a good NFL Combine and showed off his speed, footwork, and accuracy. He has vast college experience from three schools, also including USC and Pitt. He has the mental makeup to stick and learn behind Flacco.

The Colts gave Slovis $30,000 guaranteed. This doesn't guarantee him a roster spot, but it does show the Colts had a solid level of interest in signing him following the draft.

Slovis had a sensational freshman season in 2019 at USC where he posted 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions. That was Michael Pittman Jr.'s senior season and Drake London's sophomore season.

He remained the starter in 2020 during the pandemic-shortened season but struggled in 2021. He eventually transferred to Pittsburgh in 2022 and then to BYU in 2023. At 6-foot-2 and 223 pounds, Slovis ran a 4.55 in the 40-yard dash.

We'll see what the competition looks like when training camp arrives, but Slovis will be a player to watch.
