The Indianapolis Colts have signed cornerback David Long Jr. to their practice squad. The organization announced the transaction on their official website.
Long was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played four seasons for the Rams, appearing in 52 total games.
Long's best season came in 2021, when he recorded 40 combined tackles, four passes defended, and one interception. During Super Bowl LVI, Long played 50 defensive snaps and made four combined tackles.
In 2022, Long's numbers dropped. He had an overall PFF grade of 53.6. When targeted, he gave up an opponent passer rating of 113.4.
During the 2023 offseason, he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he was released after only eight games. He then had short stints with the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers to finish off the season.
Across the campaign, he had 19 combined tackles and one pass defended. His 97.6 opponent passer rating was encouraging, though.
In May, Long signed with the New York Giants, but he did not make the 53-man roster.
With the Colts, the cornerback will look to return to form. Given his resume, he is an intriguing depth option on the practice squad. He has played in six career playoff games, and he is still only 26 years old.
