Anonymous NFL exec said Colts overpaid for one free agent image

The Indianapolis Colts have been extremely quiet when it comes to outside additions in NFL free agency this offseason, having brought in just two players once the new league year began.

One of those players, the first the Colts signed from the outside, was defensive tackle Raekwon Davis. The 26-year-old defensive tackle was brought in on a two-year deal worth $14 million, half of which was guaranteed. According to Over The Cap, that ranks 42nd among 239 interior defensive linemen.

However, some believe it was an overpay. An anonymous executive stated as much in a piece detailing the free agency moves for all 32 NFL teams.

“The biggest thing was being able to keep Grover (Stewart) and (Michael) Pittman,” an exec said. “Those are good players who are your players. They spent too much for Raekwon Davis. You are paying for height, weight, speed. It’s all good until they don’t play well.”

The contract essentially comes down to a one-year deal considering the Colts and move on from Davis and save $6.49 million against the cap if he's cut or traded during the 2025 offseason.

The Colts desperately needed to add depth to the interior defensive line behind Grover Stewart. Davis is expected to play mostly at the one-technique position, but he has the versatility to also work at the three-technique in a pinch.

We'll see if this anonymous executive turns out to be correct, but this offseason's moves will certainly be under the microscope depending on the results of the 2024 season.
