It has been a rough preseason for Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay.

After an up-and-down season that included eight missed field-goal attempts — five from 50 yards or more — Gay hasn't provided much hope for the fanbase.

He’s 1-of-4 on his field-goal attempts through the first two preseason contests. Two of his misses have come from 50 or more yards.

While those are certainly more difficult to convert, he's being paid handsomely to make those kicks.

Despite the struggles Gay has endured this preseason, it hasn’t led to any lost confidence from head coach Shane Steichen thus far.

He’s a pro. I think he’s gonna be just fine. We’ll be fine there,” Steichen said after the second preseason game.

In Tuesday’s joint practice, Gay went 5/5 on his field goal attempts, but will that carry into Thursday night when the Colts wrap up the preseason against the Cincinnati Bengals?

Ideally, the starting offense puts together touchdown drives in the two quarters of play they will see to end the preseason.

But if Gay’s number is called at any point during the matchup, he will need to prove these struggles are behind him if the fanbase is going to have any confidence in him going into the season.
