The Texans second-round cornerback Kamari Lassiter learned something new about his head coach on the first day of minicamp on Friday.

During his post-workout interview, Lassiter found out Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans attended Alabama, Georgia's arch-rival in the SEC. Lassiter went to Georgia and was genuinely shocked at the news.

"Coach went to 'Bama?" Lassiter responded in a press conference, followed by a humorous pause and a playful expression. "I ain't know that."

This lighthearted exchange highlights the deep-rooted rivalries within the SEC, particularly between Georgia and Alabama. Both programs boast impressive recent success, with Georgia claiming SEC titles in 2017 and 2022 and national championships in 2017, 2021 and 2022. Alabama, however, remains a powerhouse, winning nine SEC championships since 2009 and six national titles in the same timeframe. Ryans played at Alabama from 2002 to 2005, though, before Nick Saban joined the Crimson Tide.

Lassiter's playful comment also exemplifies a common thread in sports — athletes carrying their college pride and engaging in friendly banter with rivals. We've seen this with Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, a vocal advocate for his alma mater, Ohio State, particularly when referencing their rival, "that team up north" (Michigan). Lassiter even mentioned how Stroud cooked Georgia in the 2022 Peach Bowl.

It also showcased Lassiter's personality despite the whirlwind schedule he's faced since his college season ended. From training and the NFL Combine to his Pro Day, draft weekend and now rookie minicamp, Lassiter balances learning the ropes with a touch of humor. It's refreshing to see a young player comfortable enough to joke with the media, offering a glimpse into his personality and potentially a glimpse into the Texans' locker room culture.

Soon, though, the Texans will need him to be who they picked with the No. 42 selection. He'll need to bring toughness, dependability, and positional flexibility to the Texans' secondary. Lassiter embodies the "SWARM" mentality Ryans has instilled, showcasing a relentless pursuit of victory on film.
