A new football season is dawning upon us, and the Green Bay Packers are in the familiar position of chasing a championship.
After a surprising 2023 season in which the Packers rode a hot Jordan Love to a Divisional Round appearance, expectations are high for this Green Bay squad. Love has a freshly-inked extension and a deep, young core of receiving talent to work with.
If there's one issue, though, it's the lack of a bona-fide number one. Though pass-catchers like Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs all have the chance to have good seasons with the Packers, none have yet earned superstar status.
So if the Packers decide to go for broke in 2024, a trade for a true top target for Love may be at the top of their priority list. If that's the case, it seems likely they would make a bid for a veteran receiver they already know quite well.
Las Vegas Raiders wideout Davante Adams, who spent the first eight years of his career in Green Bay, is watching his new team enter the early stages of a rebuild. According to insider Jeff Howe of The Athletic, sources around the league believe there is a strong chance Adams gets traded in 2024.
"Barring an unexpectedly hot start, some around the league are wondering if the Raiders would move receiver Davante Adams at the trade deadline," Howe said. "They need to maximize their draft assets to find a franchise quarterback, and the 31-year-old Adams isn’t likely to be around when the Raiders are ready to make a playoff push."
Had Adams stayed in Green Bay his entire career, he likely would have been the slam-dunk answer for "best receiver in Packers history." As it is, he put up 8,121 yards, 73 touchdowns, six Pro-Bowl appearances, and two first-team All-Pro selections in a Packers uniform.
If Adams is available, the Packers could make a strong pitch to the star wideout to return to his old home. When Adams left, 39-year-old Aaron Rodgers was still the quarterback, but with 25-year-old Love now under center, there is more stability in the Green Bay offense.
It all comes down to fit: Do the Packers want Adams back, and does Adams see himself returning to Green Bay? Check both of those boxes, and the Packers could have their WR1 right back where he used to belong.
