Sometimes, in the NFL, all it takes to make a trade is pure necessity.
The Los Angeles Rams find themselves in a desperate position. After two weeks, they're 0-2, and their two best receivers are out indefinitely. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers find themselves with a surplus at the same position.
Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp each have one of the best seasons in franchise history under their belts in the last half-decade, and now head coach Sean McVay has to find a way forward. It's still early, but the Rams could fall out of playoff position quickly if they can't find a solution to the passing game.
The Packers are in a position to capitalize on the Rams' need. Coming into the season, there were five talented, young receivers on the depth chart for Green Bay, which is both a blessing and a curse. They don't need all five, and one has barely seen any playing time.
At this point, Green Bay has to ask itself if second-year wideout Bo Melton is best served staying on the team, or being traded to a receiver-needy team like the Rams.
Melton, 25, came out of nowhere at the end of the 2023 season and wowed Packers fans over the final month. He racked up 211 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' final three games, then had a touchdown catch in the 49ers' divisional round game against the San Francisco 49ers.
This season, though, Melton is buried on the depth chart behind Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. He has played 18% of the offensive snaps and 30% of the special teams stats for the Packers this season.
It won't be long before a player with zero targets on the season is considered a bench piece. If the Packers want to get value for a player who has shown promise in Melton, they had better do it soon. And the Rams may be the team desperate enough to give them that value.
