Are the Green Bay Packers truly a Super Bowl threat nowadays?
It feels as though the answer could break either way. Now that they've won their past two games, the Packers have reasserted themselves as solid competitors in the NFC playoff picture. At the same time, they've yet to land that signature win this season, having lost two games to top NFC rivals.
There may not be much the Packers can do to tweak their roster this season, save for the trade deadline. But how they perform the rest of the way will play a huge role in how dramatically they decide to alter the roster in seasons to come.
One area of concern for the Packers has been the interior offensive line, particularly center, where fourth-year starter Josh Myers isn't performing like a candidate for a long-term extension. That could lead to a big move from Green Bay at the center position this spring.
Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department named center as the Packers' "biggest weakness" and predicted that they would sign four-time Pro Bowler Ryan Kelly of the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent.
"Josh Myers has continued to be below-average this season and his contract is about to expire. In other words, it's unlikely that Myers will be back as the starting center in Green Bay next fall," the authors said.
"Meanwhile, Kelly is about to hit the open market and is still playing at a high level. An injury caused him to miss Weeks 4 and 5, but the nine-year veteran had given up just three pressures and earned a respectable 68.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in the Colts' first three games of the campaign."
Kelly is 31, so he may not be expected to have a long career in Green Bay if he signs there. However, he still played at a Pro Bowl level in 2023 and would vastly improve Green Bay's line in the short-term.
If winning a championship during Jordan Love's extension is the Packers' implicit goal, finding Love the perfect center is a worthwhile objective. Kelly could very well be the best player available at the position this spring, and it makes complete sense to pursue him.
