The Green Bay Packers have a lot of depth on offense in 2024, but running back seems to be the exception.
Career Packer A.J. Dillon is out for the season and rookie MarShawn Lloyd has been frequently injured, leaving only second-year undrafted free agent Emanuel Wilson to back up the Packers' starter, Josh Jacobs.
The Packers are used to having a stout running game, and not being able to depend on multiple backs is something of a discomfort at the moment. Though they aren't likely to address it immediately, Green Bay could be in the market for backfield insurance in 2025.
On Monday, Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department predicted that the Packers would land Cleveland Browns backup D'Onta Foreman in free agency to add some depth and brute force in their backfield next season.
"With A.J. Dillon and Emanuel Wilson set to hit free agency this offseason, Green Bay could use another running back to take some of the load off Josh Jacobs' shoulders," the authors said.
"Specifically, the offense could use a between-the-tackles bruiser, which fits Foreman's profile. He could be a good complement to Jacobs and should be a relatively cheap pickup in free agency."
Foreman, 28, is already well-traveled, currently playing for his fifth team in Cleveland. His best season came in 2022, when he racked up 914 rushing yards as the part-time starter for the Carolina Panthers.
Foreman isn't the kind of signing a fan base gets jazzed up for during the offseason, but he could provide valuable depth behind Jacobs. Bell cow backs tend to wear down quickly, and Jacobs has a lot of tread on his tires, with more than double the career carries of Foreman.
If the Packers are looking for a veteran presence on their offensive depth chart, Foreman seems like an ideal fit. The question will be whether they value him more highly than other running back-needy teams heading into 2025.
