The Green Bay Packers could have a high-powered offense in 2024. But in the National Football League, you're only as strong as your weakest link.
If things go according to plan, Jordan Love will play every game under center for the Packers this season. But every season, lots of teams are forced to entrust games to their backup quarterbacks. What if the Packers have to turn to theirs?
Currently, Love's primary backup is 26-year-old Sean Clifford, who has looked extremely shaky in Green Bay's two preseason games. Clifford is a combined 16-for-29 passing with just 154 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
With Clifford's struggles in mind, it's possible the Packers could look to the trade market for a more suitable backup. And one writer believes the perfect trade partner for Green Bay would be the Cleveland Browns.
Christopher Kline of FanSided proposed a trade that would send Browns backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 sixth-round pick to Green Bay in exchange for a 2025 fifth-rounder.
"The upside with (Thompson-Robinson) is far more pronounced than with Sean Clifford, who is two years older and not half the athlete," Kline said. "(Thompson-Robinson) is a legitimate dual-threat quarterback. He scrambled 14 times for 65 yards last season, including four first down conversions."
Thompson-Robinson, 24, was forced into action midway through last season when Cleveland starter Deshaun Watson first went down with the shoulder injury that ultimately ended his season. He started three games for the Browns, going 1-2 at the helm.
Thompson-Robinson hasn't exactly torched opposing defenses as an NFL passer, throwing for 440 yards on 60 attempts, with one touchdown to four interceptions. But he does have the experience on Clifford, who has yet to start an NFL game under any circumstances.
Hopefully, Green Bay never needs to worry about who will replace Love. But if they do, having a capable backup will be paramount to the Packers' playoff hopes. Whether Thompson-Robinson is the right fit remains to be seen.
