Bill Belichick will not be on the sidelines in 2024, but rather eyeing a return in 2025. In the meantime, he has been making appearances in the media and joined Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee Show on September 9.
Belichick's appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" included a segment where he discussed a defensive scheme against teams with elite wide receivers. In doing so he discussed the Patriots 2014 trip to Lambeau Field to play the Green Bay Packers. The Packers' 2014 wide receivers were led by Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. The No.3 wideout was a rookie named Davante Adams.
Belichick explained how the Patriots would use Darrelle Revis on a team's No. 2 option and then double-team the No. 1 option.
"Whoever the third guy was, was the third guy," Belichick explained. "I won't say 'we didn't care about him,' but we didn't care about him."
Belichick said the Patriots' game plan in the 2014 matchup against the Packers was to double Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, taking their chances with Davante Adams.
"We're going to take our chances on Davante Adams. He hasn't really done much," said Belichick. "And he killed us. He had about 125 yards in that game and that was his coming out party."
Adams had six catches for 121 yards on 11 targets in his rookie season matchup against Belichick's Patriots.
